Where Will We Learn: A film by Nia Fekri and children from Holland Park School

We’re excited to share a powerful collaboration between children at Holland Park School and lead artist Nia Fekri who was in residency at the school. To celebrate Nia’s residency, we invite you to an online film screening of Where Will We Learn – a collaborative film created through this four-month project.

Between March and July 2024, Nia collaborated with children in years 9 and 12, with the support of Olivia Tukacevska, Assistant Principal and Head of Art at the school, and their class art teachers.

The residency included a dedicated workspace for Nia at the school and regular workshops with children at an after school art club and during lesson time. Together the group decided to explore themes such as dream spaces for education, slowness, inspiration and restriction, and of course play. Steered by Nia, the children also used Direct Animation techniques to layer sentiment and movement onto analogue film footage of themselves and their school.

The hard copy of the material and playfulness of games such as “paper plane poetry” set alongside one another to create an open-ended and remarkable project. Children were free to say “no”, to choose what they wanted to work on in each session, and to find out about the realities of being a professional artist through talking to Nia.

We continue to aim to support artists and children to work together to question the structures around them, using art as a tool for empathy and play. We can’t wait for more!

We are excited to share some exciting news with you – we are in the process of planning our first permanent learning space at The Mosaic Rooms!

As valued members of our community, your feedback is incredibly important to us. We want to ensure that our new learning space meets the needs and expectations of our visitors, local partners, and community groups. That’s why we are reaching out to invite you to share your thoughts and ideas with us.

Express Your Interest to be part of The Mosaic Rooms Young Collective 2025

Please note: This year, due to refurbishments at The Mosaic Rooms, we’ll be hosting sessions at Gasworks, SE11 5RH.

The Mosaic Rooms Young Collective is a group of 18–25-year-olds who will meet monthly between April and October 2025* to take part in creative sessions with professional artist Jacob V Joyce. This year, we will continue exploring the theme Cruising Alternative Realities, with a particular focus on seasonal shifts, land justice, the art of growing, nature, and all things leisurely paced.

These sessions will encourage you to connect with the natural world and each other through creative practices such as foraging, planting, collaborative artmaking, and storytelling. We’ll explore how art and nature intersect, and how the slow, cyclical rhythms of the land can inspire new ways of thinking and being.

You’ll be guided through the creation of your own work, and together we’ll discuss and develop ideas for a potential public event or exhibition that you and the group will choose and deliver. (This outcome is an option. Previous projects have resulted in exhibition / banner drops.) This is an opportunity to build your creative skills and connect with others in a supportive environment, all while contributing to a meaningful collective project.

Other benefits include:

  • – Personal support from The Mosaic Rooms team and other artists and professionals to help develop your creative career or personal interests.This will also be supported by external mentors.
  • – The chance to programme and deliver a public event or show of work in autumn 2025.
  • – Monthly sessions in and around Gasworks, SE11 5RH, where you’ll be able to engage with professional artists, learn new creative techniques, and reflect on the year’s theme.

No previous art experience is necessary—just an open, curious mind and a desire to explore new creative possibilities!

To apply, fill out this form to let us know you’re interested in joining the Collective. Priority will be given to individuals who identify as part of the Global Majority and who have no formal art education beyond GCSE level.


Jacob V Joyce is an artist, researcher, and educator from South London. Their work is community focussed ranging from mural painting, illustration, workshops, poetry, and punk music with their band Screaming Toenail. Joyce has illustrated international human rights campaigns for Amnesty International and Global justice Now, had their comics published in national newspapers and self-published several DIY zines. Their work with
 OPAL (Out Proud African LGBTI) has gone viral across the African Continent and increased the visibility of activists fighting the legacies of colonially instated homophobic legislation. 

Joyce was recently awarded a Support Structures Fellowship from the Serpentine Gallery and a Westminster PhD research scholarship at C.R.E.A.M, (Centre for Research and Education in Art Media.) Previous recognitions include a collaborative residency at Serpentine Galleries Education Department with Rudy Loewe 2020, TFL (Transport for London) Public Arts Grant 2019Artist Participation Residency at Gasworks London/East Yard Trinidad Tobago 2019, Tate Galleries Education Department Residency 2019, Nottingham Contemporary Community Artist Residency 2017. 

Joyce is a non-binary artist amplifying historical and nourishing new queer and anti-colonial narratives. 

School Studio: Structure, Restructure – School Project 2023

 

 

School Studio: Structure, Restructure is The Mosaic Rooms’ major project with secondary schools in 2023.

Interdisciplinary artist Nia Fekri collaborated with students at Kensington Aldridge Academy to reflect on the power structures which govern their lives, and to envisage alternatives to them. Fekri worked with Year 12 students to explore experimental approaches to film making, and how the medium can be used as a space for reflection.

About the artist
Nia Fekri is an Iranian-British multidisciplinary artist and educator working primarily with moving-image, writing and performance. She received a BA from Slade School of Fine Art. Her work often deals with modes of storytelling in conversation and the ways they structure everyday realities and fictions. She is driven by need to register the fragmentary and ghostly nature of immigrant experiences, familial relationships and intimate spaces. As an educator and facilitator, Nia’s focus is on collaborative storytelling, speculative exercise through a variety of mediums. Her most recent projects have been in collaboration with UCL Art Museum, The Mosaic Rooms gallery and the British Film Institute.

STORYTELLING WITH ELIAS MATAR

Elias Matar is a Palestinian play specialist, drama therapist, workshop facilitator, performer and founder of the El Bayet Centre for Performing Arts & Drama Therapy. Elias holds an MA in Drama and Movement Therapy from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

School Studio: Structure, Restructure – School Project 2023

About this project

School Studio: Structure, Restructure is our major project with secondary schools in 2023.

Since 2019, The Mosaic Rooms has worked with students at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School and Kensington Aldridge Academy to widen students’ experience of art, to include makers and art forms typically neglected in mainstream curriculums. These artist-led projects enable students to use the artistic process to explore situations and issues affecting their lives 

Throughout Spring 2023, textile artist Aya Haidar collaborated with Year 12 students at Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School to explore the power structures which govern their lives, and ways they could creatively subvert them. Their response was to embroider meaningful words or symbols onto patches of cloth, then covertly stitch them into their own school uniforms – as a form of ‘silent protest’, similar to those generated under restrictive regimes across the world. 

At the same time, interdisciplinary artist Nia Fekri collaborated with students at Kensington Aldridge Academy to reflect on the power structures which govern their lives, and to envisage alternatives to them. Fekri worked with Year 12 students to explore experimental approaches to film making, and how the medium can be used as a space for reflection.  

We have created a resource to enable teachers and other arts practitioners to replicate or adapt these projects in their own educational settings. It contains session plans for both projects, lists of materials needed and reference-artworks, as well as learning outcomes and conversation points. About the artists

Aya Haidar graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, during which she completed an exchange program at School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She then went on to graduate with an MSc in NGOs and Development from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Aya’s current work focuses on the recycling of found and disposable objects making poetic works that explore labour, displacement, domesticity, womanhood and memory, with a particular focus on the Middle East through the histories contained within aged, and culturally specific objects. Aya has been involved in numerous social engagement projects, including Deveron Projects residency program, Mosaic Rooms’ Together Apart: Lockdown Diaries, Cubitt’s Out of Service, INIVA’s A Place for Conversation, V&A’s Record, Resist, Reframe, Tate’s Illuminating Cultures program and INIVA’s Emotional Learning Cards, as well as being selected for Hans Ulrich Obrist and Hoor Al Qasemi’s Do It Arab project (2016).

Rosie Thwaites works as Project Manager on the project. Rosie is a creator of content for children – written, visual, multimedia and educational. She has made content for schools, charities, television and online. Her work is informed by her solid background in teaching and arts-education programme management. Rosie studied Fine Art BA at Goldsmiths. After completing a PGCE in 2003, she taught Art and Design in the state sector for 5 years (at secondary school level). In 2007, she joined the Royal Drawing School to create a London-wide arts-education programme providing intensive engagement with art for deserving young people aged 10-18. 

She now creates education content for clients such as The Mosaic Rooms, Ragdoll Production Company, Children’s Story Hour, and The New School. She was long-listed for the World Illustration Awards in 2022.
